Purpose of theMission

The auxiliary oiler and replenishment ship (AOR) ‘Patiño’ set sail last November 4th to integrate into the counter-piracy Operation ‘Atalanta’ in the Indian Ocean. This EU-led operation started back in December 2008.

This mission intends to reinforce the maritime security in the Gulf of Aden and Somalia protecting merchant ships working for the World Food Program. Its main task therefore is to deter pirates from operating in the area and arrest, if possible, those who have committed alleged crimes.

To this end, the AOR ‘Patiño’ has just successfully concluded a series of operational qualification trials to be in full readiness for this mission.

This is the third time the ‘Patiño’ participates in this mission. The other deployments took place in 2011 and 2012. This time, the Spanish auxiliary ship will remain in the operations area from November 21st to April 20th 2018, relieving the offshore patrol vessel ‘Rayo’ currently patrolling the area.
