Purpose of the mission

Frigate ‘Blas de Lezo (F-103) has just departed from her homeport (Ferrol) towards the Mediterranean Sea to integrate into the Standing NATO Maritime Group Two (SNMG-2) until November.

These standing groups are normally in high readiness and availability with a wide array of capabilities which NATO uses to intervene in possible crisis scenarios.

To maintain such a high level of readiness, the Group is scheduled to participate in several multinational exercises like ‘Brilliant Mariner’ in French waters and later in ‘NATO Nemo Trials’ off the Turkish coast.

At the same time, the Spanish frigate will also take part in the counter-terrorist operation ‘Sea Guardian’. The F-103 will visit the following ports: Lisbon (Portugal), Toulon (France), La Spezia (Italy) and Antalya (Turkey).

For this deployment, the ‘Blas de Lezo’ has embarked an SH-60B helicopter with its support personnel, and a Marine Corps security team.
