Purpose of the mission

The offshore patrol vessel ‘Alborán’ is going to take part in the forthcoming 2017 NAFO campaign in the fishing grounds of Newfoundland (Canada). The ship will deploy for two months, from August 23rd to October 22nd.

Spain collaborates in this seasonal campaign providing ships for this European Union endeavor. Other participating nations include: USA, Japan, Cuba, Iceland, Norway, Russia, the Ukraine, South Korea, Denmark and France. 

In this deployment the ‘Alborán’ will conduct monitoring and surveillance tasks in the designated fishing grounds. The vessel is also tasked with the mission of providing assistance to trawlers in the Newfoundland area, when so requested.

For this specific campaign, four NAFO inspectors and two EFCA (European Fisheries Control Agency) coordinators will also embark in support of the monitoring tasks.
There are two port calls programmed: Saint John’s (Canada) and Punta Delgada (Azores) for crew rest and rotation of inspectors.
