February 24th marked a month since frigate ‘Canarias’ deployed in central Mediterranean to participate in Operation ‘Sophia’. In this month, the F-86 has identified and arrested 3 alleged traffickers, destroyed 4 craft used to smuggle people, and rescued 811 migrants.

The three alleged traffickers were identified on board the ‘Canarias’ based on suspicions gathered, and subsequently confirmed by interviews, during the SOLAS operation by the rescue team and the special operations and intelligence squad. Once identified, they were arrested and handed to the Italian police who will bring them to justice.

The total number of people rescued is 811, quite a lot if we take into account the bad weather, rough sea and the poor condition of the craft used to smuggle migrants.

Frigate ‘Canarias’ (F-86)

The ‘Canarias’ is the sixth F-80 frigate (based on the Oliver Hazard Perry-class) built by Navantia in Ferrol. She was delivered to the Spanish Navy in December 1994.

With a crew of 217 people, the frigate is currently assigned to Operation ‘Sophia’ fighting the illegal trafficking of people in the central Mediterranean Sea.
