Last Friday, the Spanish Navy F-100 frigate ‘Méndez Núñez’ and the auxiliary oiler and replenishment ship ‘Patiño’ arrived at the port of Taranto (Italy) to integrate into the Sub-Group TU.02 of NATO’s Standing Maritime Group Two to contribute to warrant international security in the Mediterranean Sea.

TU.02’s Commander, Captain Rubén Rodríguez, welcomed the ships and addressed the crews on the occasion of their new deployment. Frigate ‘Méndez Núñez’ will relieve her sister ship ‘Almirante Juan de Borbón’ as flagship.

The fleet oiler ‘Patiño’ will provide logistic support to all naval units of the Maritime Group, as well as to other Spanish warships deployed in the Mediterranean like frigate ‘Canarias’ presently engaged in EUNAVFOR MED Operation ‘Sophia’ fighting human trafficking in that area.

TU.02 is currently made up of these two Spanish warships, plus the Canadian frigate HMCS ‘St. John’s’ and the Turkish frigate TCG ‘Giresun’.

The task group will visit different ports in Greece, Turkey, Italy and Tunisia and will also take part in the large international anti-submarine exercise ‘Dynamic Manta’ in Sicilian waters (Italy) along with the Spanish submarine ‘Mistral’ which has already left her home port in Cartagena to start the LIVEX phase prior to the exercise itself.

This NATO Maritime Group, made up of frigates and logistic ships from different nations, is always in readiness and tasked with rapid reaction whenever and wherever the Atlantic Organization has to intervene.
