On the 5th of this month, the Spanish Navy training tall ship ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ turned 90. Despite the advanced age, the ship is approaching her centenary in excellent seafaring condition and ready to start her 89th training cruise for the new promotion of midshipmen, scheduled for March 12th.

Very few ships around the world can boast such ‘good health’. The average service life of a warship is 40 years, so our training ship is one of the oldest operational units sailing the seas. So far she has sailed more than 1,734,000 nautical miles.

The ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ was launched on March 5th 1927 sponsored by the wife of Prime Minister General Primo de Rivera.
