The Spanish Navy frigate ‘Canarias’, currently deployed in the EU Operation ‘Sophia’, was informed that the NGO ship ‘Luventa’ had rescued a migrant who was seriously ill.
The frigate proceeded at full speed towards the designated area and collected a 16-year old Gambian boy with signs of hypothermia and lung problems after drowning.
The frigate then headed towards the port of Lampedusa where a SAR craft from the Italian Coast Guard took care of the boy, thus successfully concluding the medical evacuation.
