Spanish Navy units participate in the multinational exercise ‘African Lion’ in Moroccan waters.

From April 17th to May 2nd, the international exercise ‘African Lion 17’ has taken place in the Moroccan training range of ‘Cap Draa’.

Participating Spanish units included the LPD ‘Castilla’ with 4 LCM-type craft; the Third Landing Battalion, a Security Team from the Marine Corps Brigade and an H-500 helicopter from the Aircraft Flotilla.

‘African Lion 17’ is a bilateral exercise organized by Morocco and the United States, but with participation of naval elements from other European and African nations, among them Spain. The purpose of the exercise was joint training and to achieve interoperability among the different participating units in order to enhance regional security and strengthen Moroccan capabilities to tackle possible threats from violent extremist groups from the Sahel and the Maghreb.

On this occasion, the Spanish Navy provided a landing force with a Command and Control unit, two rifle companies, one of them mechanized, an artillery battery and several combat support elements.
