The LPD ‘Galicia’ (L-51), current flagship of the counterpiracy Operation ‘Atalanta’ in the Indian Ocean, has conducted a replenishment at sea (RAS) with the U.S. Navy oiler ‘Laramie’.

During the two-hour manoeuver off the northern coast of Somalia, the ‘Laramie’ supplied the Spanish warship with nearly 400 cubic meters of fuel.

Thanks to these replenishments at sea, the warships can remain in the area of operations for prolonged periods of time in surveillance missions, protecting World Food Program ships and thwart pirate-related activities.

After the replenishment at sea operation, both ships continued with their respective missions.

Operation ‘Atalanta’

Operation ‘Atalanta’ is an EU counter-piracy mission designed to attain security in the Gulf of Aden and the coast of Somalia and protect ships transiting that area.

So far, 35 Spanish warships have participated in this mission, on several occasions as flagships of the whole operation.

The ‘Galicia’ took command of this mission on February 24th and will conclude at the end of July. The ship has an international Staff with members from nine different nations.
