The training ship ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ has just arrived at Marín (where the Naval Academy is located) after a four-month training cruise through the Atlantic Ocean. The veteran ship was welcomed by the Academy’s Superintendent, teachers, students and family members.

The ship will participate in the festivities organized on the occasion of the Spanish Navy patron saint: Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

There will be three open days for visitors on Thursday, Friday and Saturday when local people can visit the ship in the afternoon.

89th Training Cruise

During this training cruise, midshipmen from the Spanish Navy, Marine Corps and Quartermaster’s Corps received the necessary formation and training to become future officers.

In addition to the midshipmen, the ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ has 24 officers, 22 NCOs, 125 leading seamen and ratings and 2 civilians, all of them under command of Captain Victoriano Gilabert.

This time, the ship has visited the ports of Tenerife, Santo Domingo, New York, Dublin, Den Helder and Antwerp.

Although the main task of the ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ is to provide nautical training and expertise to future naval officers, the ship is also a ‘floating embassy’ and her presence abroad serves to support the foreign policy of the Kingdom of Spain.

This small ‘piece of Spanish territory’ was a most fitting place for the pledge of allegiance to the flag ceremony organized in Antwerp for a group of 47 Spanish citizens.
