Operation ‘Atalanta’

The 11th Aircraft Squadron wraps up its third deployment in Operation ‘Atalanta’.
It is the newest squadron in the Spanish Navy.

The most modern Aircraft Squadron of the Spanish Navy has just concluded its third consecutive deployment within two years in Operation ‘Atalanta’ in the Indian Ocean.

On this occasion, the deployment took place on board the amphibious assault ship ‘Galicia’ as part of the embarked air unit, consisting of 2 SH-3D helicopters and 4 RPAS ‘Scan Eagle’.

The 11th Aircraft Squadron is made up of ‘Scan Eagle’ remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS). During this mission the different aircraft flew a total of 225 hours in 33 sorties, providing valuable intelligence in the areas of interest.

So far, the 11th Squadron has been 18 months out of base with more than 700 flight hours fighting piracy in the Indian Ocean. The Spanish Navy RPAS are scheduled to deploy in Iraq as of next October.
