OPV ‘Alborán’ participates in this year’s NAFO campaign in the North Atlantic.
Thursday, August 24, 2017

The offshore patrol vessel ‘Alborán’ just got underway to take part in the 2017 NAFO (North-West Atlantic Fisheries Organization) campaign in the fishing grounds of Newfoundland (Canada), in collaboration with the State Fisheries General Secretariat. In this deployment the ‘Alborán’ will conduct monitoring and surveillance tasks in the designated fishing grounds. The vessel will also be tasked with the mission of providing assistance to trawlers in the area, when so requested.

Spain collaborates in NAFO’s seasonal campaigns providing ships for this European Union endeavor. Other participating nations include: USA, Japan, Cuba, Iceland, Norway, Russia, the Ukraine, South Korea, Denmark and France.

For this specific campaign, four NAFO inspectors (two of them Spanish) and two EFCA (European Fisheries Control Agency) coordinators will also embark in support of the monitoring tasks.

The ship, with a crew of 37 people and under command of Lt-Cdr Justo Solano, is usually homeported in Cartagena (SE Spain) and belongs to the Maritime Action Force.

There are two port calls programmed for this campaign: Saint John’s (Canada) and Punta Delgada (Azores) for crew rest and rotation of inspectors.
