Operation ‘SOPHIA’

Activities of EUNAVFOR MED SOPHIA’s Force Commander in Catania (Italy).
Since the arrival of AOR ‘Cantabria’, flagship of Operation ‘Sophia’, Spanish Navy Rear-admiral Javier Moreno has been in close contact with different Italian authorities associated with this EU humanitarian operation.

The auxiliary oiler and replenishment ship (AOR) ‘Cantabria’ (A-15), arrived at Catania with the Operation’s FHQ onboard. The Force Commander welcomed several Italian authorities including Prefetto Silvia Riccio who was toured around the ship and later attended a briefing on the current situation of Operation ‘Sophia’.

Next day Rear-admiral Javier Moreno visited the European Regional Task Force’s HQ in Catania where he was received by the Director of the European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders of the Member States of the European Union (FRONTEX), Miguel Angelo Nunes Nicolau, and representatives from other European constabulary agencies (EUROPOL).

The Force Commander also met with the Attorney General of Catania Carmelo Zuccaro at the Procura della Repubblica where they exchanged viewpoints on the current situation aimed at trying to improve the effectiveness of the Operation.

He also visited the air units stationed at Sigonella Air Base, including maritime patrol aircraft from Luxemburg, the Grappa Detachment and the Forward Operations Base (FOB) of the Italian Air Force. The visit concluded with a flight on a D4 taking part in one of the missions over the Libyan coast.
