Fleet Commander Who Is Who

Admiral D.Juan Rodriguez Garat


Admiral Rodríguez assumed the duties and responsibilities of Fleet Commander on 10 October 2016.

Born in Ferrol in 1956, he graduated from the Spanish Naval Academy as Lieutenant Junior Grade in 1979.

He has served afloat for more than 24 years on both ships and Staffs of both, Spanish Navy and NATO.

His shore appointments included different positions at the Fleet and Navy HQ, the latest as Admiral Chief of Naval Personnel.

He has had eight opportunities to exercise command at sea: FPB "Alsedo", Corvette "Diana", Frigate "Álvaro de Bazán", 31st Frigate Squadron, Standing NATO Maritime Group 1, EU "Atalanta", Spanish Power Projection Group and Spanish Navy High Readiness Forces -Maritime- Headquarters (SPMARFOR).

Formerly a specialist in Naval Communications, Admiral Rodriguez graduated from the Royal Naval Staff College at Greenwich (UK) and was granted a Master in Defence Studies by the London University in 1993. He was awarded three Grand Crosses of Military Orders and a total of eleven other national and international Military awards and decorations.

His role as Fleet Commander is to provide ships, submarines, aircraft and marines ready to meet the operational requirements. He is also chief of the Maritime Security and Surveillance Command in charge of conducting, under the command of the Chief of the Defense Staff, the designated naval operations.

He is married to Teresa Martínez and they have five children.
