African Deployment – Offshore Patrol Boat ‘Atalaya’ (P-74)

Purpose of the mission Activities

Purpose of the Mission

The offshore patrol vessel (OPV) ‘Atalaya’ will conduct a series of activities with African navies during the next four months as part of the Defense Diplomacy Plan. This deployment is intended to enhance maritime security and cooperative security operations in West Africa and the Gulf of Guinea, jointly organized by the Ministry of Defense and the Spanish Navy.

With this deployment the Spanish OPV will contribute to enhance the maritime security capabilities of regional armed forces with activities of military cooperation. The purpose of these activities is to strengthen the capabilities of those nations to successfully challenge the existing threats like piracy, and illegal fishing and immigration, which can also affect the interests of Spain.

The P-74 will also take part in the international manoeuvers ‘Grand Nemo 19’ to improve the interoperability of all participating units from the United States, Portugal, France, Denmark and the regional West African navies concerned.

Defense Diplomacy Plan

The ‘Atalaya’ will alsosupportthe Defense Diplomacy Plan designed to cooperate with regional west-African nations to help them enhance their capabilities, fostering dialogue and cooperation to promotemutual understanding and confidence, thus contributing to maritime security in the area.
