Purpose of the mission – Frigate ‘MÉNDEZ NÚÑEZ’

Frigate ‘Méndez Núñez’ (F-104) departed Ferrol to start an operational deployment during which she will circumnavigate the globe sailing eastwards in the year when we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the first voyage around the world completed by Juan Sebastián de Elcano.

During this deployment, frigate ‘Méndez Núñez’ will integrate into several operations and manoeuvers with naval units from friendly and allied nations. In October the ship will start the voyage back home.

Frigate ‘Méndez Núñez’

The F-104 is the fourth ‘Alvaro de Bazán’-class escort homeported in Ferrol and delivered to the Spanish Navy in March 2006.

These units are most capable ships which greatly and successfully contribute to attain the goals of national defense for the 21st century. She was named after the eminent Spanish naval officer Casto Méndez Núñez, hero of the 1865 War of the Pacific.

Her state-of-the-art combat system permits the warship to deploy in any scenario as a most valuable instrument at the service of the State, not only for conventional warfare operations, but peace-keeping and humanitarian aid missions as well.
