Carduus Myriacanthus: An endemic plant in the "Sierra del Retín" range. Environment

The policy of the Spanish Navy is based on sustainable development, compatible with the mission entrusted to the Armed Forces. The Navy has for many years been involved in the conservation and promotion of the biodiversity of natural areas, in such a way that all military manoeuvers may have a minimum impact on local fauna and flora.

The thistle ‘Carduus Myriacanthus’ is a plant included in the Andalusian catalogue of vulnerable species. It is an endemic thistle typical of the south of Spain and the north-African coast: In Spain it can be found in two small areas of Barbate (Cádiz): Caños de Meca and Retín.

The ‘Sierra del Retín’ range is located in a beach with significant ecological value. The thistles are preserved as they are not trampled underfoot (military activities are well delimited) and housing developments are obviously forbidden.

These up to 1-meter high plants usually develop in sandy soils near the sea.
