The oceanic patrol vessel ‘Rayo’, currently participating in operation ‘Atalanta’ fighting piracy in the Indian Ocean assisted several Somali fishermen with first aid and provisions.
In the course of a scheduled patrol, the ship’s VBSS squad (visit, board, search & seizure) visited several craft fishing in the area. This type of visits helps to reinforce cooperation and mutual confidence and enhance the awareness of local traditions and practices.
After approaching a ‘dhow’-type craft and other skiffs, one of the craft’s masters invited the Spanish OPV’s crew members to board the craft to talk and discuss the situation in the area.
During the visit, Spanish servicemen delivered food and water to the fishermen, while the medical personnel assisted several people with injuries and wounds.
