The offshore patrol vessel (OPV) ‘Meteoro’ has been actively participating in the anti-pollution efforts after the Russian trawler ‘Oleg Naydenov’ sank south of Gran Canaria.

The OPV was activated on April 23rd to provide support to the cleaning campaign, since these patrol boats are adequately fitted with pollution fighting equipment. Once deployed, the ‘Meteoro’ worked in close cooperation with other maritime assets and with the Las Palmas Rescue Centre.

The efforts consisted in hydrocarbons absorption with barriers and water suction pumps. During the activation period, the OPV collected more than 37 tons of fuel mixtures and 200,000 liters of contaminated water.

Once the collaboration was over, the ‘Meteoro’ returned to her home port in Las Palmas to continue with the scheduled training activities prior to her next deployment in the counter-piracy operation ‘Atalanta’ in the Indian Ocean.
