Operation Active Endeavour

Submarine ‘Galerna’ returns home after participating in Operation ‘Active Endeavour’
The ship has been on patrol for a month and a half in this anti-terrorist operation
Thursday, May 26, 2016

Submarine ‘Galerna’ (S-71) has just returned to her homeport in Cartagena (SE Spain) after participating in Operation ‘Active Endeavour’ (OAE) in the Mediterranean Sea. This is the first Spanish OAE deployment scheduled for 2016. The submarine has been a month and a half monitoring possible illegal and terrorist activities.

Thanks to their stealth, these ships regularly take part –undetected– in this type of operations. They are equipped with modern sensors and systems which gather intelligence and transmit it in real-time via satellite.

Submarine ‘Galerna’

‘Galerna’ (S-71) is the first of a series of four submarines built by the former Bazán shipyards (now Navantia), commissioned in 1983.

In her long operational life, the S-71 has participated in many national and NATO exercises and operations like ‘Sorbet Royal’, ‘Dogfish’, ‘Linked Seas’, ‘Dragon Hammer’, ‘Noble Mariner’, ‘Minex’ and ‘Tapon’. Most of these manoeuvers have been conducted in collaboration with other Naval, Marine Corps, Army and Air Force units.
