Last April 28th an homage service was held on board the training ship ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ in transit towards Ushuaia paying tribute to all those who died in the line of duty, especially Spanish Navy Commander Francisco Javier Montojo, who recently lost his life in Antarctic waters, and the crew of the Argentinian Navy submarine ‘San Juan’.
At approximately 100 nautical miles off the area where the submarine was last contacted, a poignant ceremony was held with participation of the ship’s crew and midshipmen.
The Guard of Honor included an navy officer from the Argentinian ship ‘Libertad’. Both ships are sailing from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia participating in the race ‘Velas Latinoamérica 2018’.
The service consisted in a prayer, the singing of naval hymns, a speech delivered by the ship’s Commanding Officer and a moving wreath-laying ceremony.
The Spanish training schooner is currently sailing in the South Atlantic taking part in her 90th Training Cruise which began on February 11th in Cádiz and is scheduled to conclude six months later on August 11th.
