The Mediterranean Sea has been the scene of an Electronic Warfare (EW) exercise (June 18 – 22) conducted by the Commander of the 31st Escort Squadron and with participation of the following units: LPD ‘Castilla’, F-100 frigates ‘Méndez Núñez’ and ‘Cristóbal Colón’ and F-80 frigate ‘Reina Sofía’.
EWX-18 was a national exercise intended to test and improve capabilities of all Electronic Warfare systems, and aimed at training crew members on procedures and techniques related to the detection and identification of emissions and individual and collective missile defense responses.
In the course of the 5-day exercise, 36 drills were conducted during 55 intense hours. In addition to the EW exercises, others drills included different aspects of naval warfare and platform control. The ships’ crews were augmented with midshipmen and Ensigns from the Naval Academy.
For the planning, execution and analysis of the exercise, EWX-18 benefited from the collaboration of different elements from the Air Force, NATO and the Spanish Navy itself.
