The Spanish Navy training ship ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ made a port of call in Charleston (South Carolina) from 11 to 17 July. This was the sixth time the ship visited this US city, the last one being in 1985, 33 years ago.

Charleston was the tenth port visited in the course of the 90th training cruise of the ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’.

On the 16th the ship celebrated the festivities of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, patron saint of the Spanish Navy with a Pledge of Allegiance to the flag ceremony for civilian personnel.

In port, the midshipmen visited the U.S. Coast Guard Base and the U.S. Marine Corps in Parris Island. They also visited the ruins of the Santa Elena Fort, the oldest Spanish settlement in South Carolina, along with its nearby museum. The midshipmen toured around the city center and attended a conference delivered by the General Consul in Miami on the Spanish Presence in Florida.

On Tuesday 17th, the ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ set sail towards Spain, where she is expected to arrive in the port of Cadiz on August 11th.
