The Spanish Navy training ship ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ has just arrived at the port of Cadiz after a six-month deployment providing intense training and instruction to a new promotion of future naval officers. The ship was welcomed by the Fleet Commander, Admiral Juan Rodriguez Garat, accompanied by other naval authorities, friends and family members.

The commanding officer of the ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’, Captain Ignacio Paz García bid farewell to the midshipmen who completed part of their training syllabus on board the ship.

During this 90th training cruise, the ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ circumnavigated the South American continent, sailing more than 17,000 nautical miles and visiting 10 ports in 7 different nations. The Spanish schooner also took part in the ‘2018 Latin-American Sails’ tall-ships race along with other training ships from 7 South-American navies.

The ship’s logbook recorded several important milestones. Among them, the celebrations to commemorate the delivery of the ship to the Spanish Navy 90 years ago, the visit to the southernmost inhabited city, Ushuaia, and having sailed through the southernmost channels of Cape Horn for the first time.
