F-100 frigate ‘Méndez Núñez’ deploys with the U.S. Navy.

Frigate ‘Méndez Núñez’ (F-104) left Ferrol this morning to start a new deployment with the U.S. Navy Carrier Strike Group 12 as escort of the USS ‘Abraham Lincoln’.

The Spanish frigate, after undergoing an intense assessment and certification process last year, and participating in several integration exercises with the CSG-12 in the east coast of Unites States in January and February, is scheduled to circumnavigate the globe, as part of this deployment, before returning to her base in Ferrol (NW Spain).

‘Méndez Núñez’ (F-104)

Frigate ‘Méndez Núñez’ boasts a modern design and notable military capabilities, with which the Navy contributes to the objectives of National Defense at the threshold of this new century. Built by ‘Navantia’ Shipyards in Ferrol, and commissioned on March 21st 2006, the ship was named after the illustrious Spanish sailor Casto Méndez Núñez, hero of the Pacific War of 1865.

The integration of these units in naval groups of other Allied nations allows Spain to contribute to the national and collective security and defense. Likewise, it is also a sign of commitment and solidarity with our allies. The ‘Méndez Núñez’ will participate in several naval operations in different parts of the world contributing to global peace and security and the protection of the values ​​of freedom and democracy of our society.

It has a crew of 215 officers, NCOs and ratings. A group of men and women who are proud of serving Spain from the sea. The F-104 is under command of Cdr. Antonio González-Tanago.
