Last Saturday, the training ship ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ sailed from Cádiz to start her 95th training cruise.
The dock was full of relatives of crew members and midshipmen who wanted to see off and observe the departure of the ship.
The old and traditional farewell ceremony started with a Mass at the Saint Dominic Convent in Cádiz and the embarkation of the so-called ‘Galeona’, an image of the Virgin of Mount Carmel which travels in the ship during the whole cruise. The ceremony was presided over by the Chief of Staff of the Spanish Navy, Admiral General Antonio Martorell who was accompanied by other civilian and military authorities.
This year the ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ is scheduled to sail the Atlantic and Pacific oceans visiting the ports of Tenerife, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Punta Arenas, Callao, Cartagena de Indias, Puerto León, Pensacola, New York and Marín where, on July 12th she will arrive after half a year of navigation, thus concluding this year’s Midshipmen Training Cruise.
