The Chief of Staff of the Spanish Navy, Admiral General Antonio Martorell Lacave, has passed away.

With a deep feeling of sorrow and sadness, the Spanish Navy informs that at 1900 hours this afternoon, March 31st, the Chief of Staff of the Spanish Navy (AJEMA), Admiral General Antonio Martorell Lacave, passed away in Madrid, as a consequence of the illness he had been suffering in the last weeks. The AJEMA has died peacefully, accompanied by his wife and children.

The Spanish Navy wishes to acknowledge and thank the Admiral for his forty-four years of generous commitment, dedication and service to Spain and the Navy, staying at the helm until the last moment. The Admiral took office as AJEMA on February 11, 2021.

Likewise, the Spanish Navy would like to express to the Admiral's family and friends its most sincere condolences in such a difficult moment.

The Navy has declared two days of mourning and the flags of all its ships, units and facilities will be flown at half mast.
