F-100 frigate ‘Méndez Núñez’ departs Ferrol to integrate into NATO’s Standing Maritime Group 2

Frigate ‘Méndez Núñez’ (F-104) left her home port in Ferrol (NW Spain) last August 18^th to integrate into the Standing NATO Maritime Group No. 2 (SNMG-2) as part of Operation ‘Noble Shield’ in the Mediterranean Sea.

The farewell ceremony was presided over by the current Commander of the 31^st Surface Squadron, Cdr. Jesús Viñas who, along with the ship’s CO, Commander David Díaz-Caneja, attended to the different media journalists present in the ceremony.

The participation of the Spanish Navy frigate in Operation ‘Noble Shield’ will contribute to underline NATO’s endeavors of visibility, naval presence and deterrence without having to escalate the present situation. To this end, an active surveillance venture on Russian Navy ships will be reinforced, as well as different training activities in the area of operations (mainly the Mediterranean Sea).
