Exercise ‘MAR ASW-23’ has just started in the Gulf of Cádiz and will conclude on the 22nd of September. It is an exercise centered on the anti-submarine warfare capability of the Navy.
Participating units include the F-80 frigates ‘Numancia’ and ‘Canarias’, the F-100 frigate ‘Almirante Juan de Borbón’, the auxiliary oiler and replenishment ship ‘Cantabria’ and submarine ‘Galerna’. In addition, Spanish Air Force C-101 jets and U.S. Navy MH-60R helicopters will also participate.
This exercise is intended to provide advanced training in anti-submarine warfare by launching real torpedoes from the frigates, helicopters and submarine.
In this type of exercises, the Spanish Navy demonstrates and evaluates its capability to face current threats. These threats are constantly changing and therefore the Navy needs technologically advanced, balanced, interoperable and expeditionary assets. To this end, the Navy must invest in training and modernization of its naval unis.
