The Commanding Officer of the offshore patrol vessel (OPV) ‘Meteoro’ welcomes you and invites you to visit this website. The ‘Meteoro’ is a multi-purpose ship designed to conduct different missions.

This project is the result of a Spanish Navy requirement to renew its patrol boats fleet with technologically advanced vessels and a high level of automation, manned by reduced crews.

The ship was designed to carry out military missions against asymmetric or conventional threats by means of presence, surveillance and limited neutralization actions. However, most missions are maritime security operations (MSO).

In addition, the ‘Meteoro’ can conduct other tasks related to the protection of national interests and the control of sovereign maritime areas, contributing to the activities carried out by other State departments with responsibilities in the maritime domain.

The ship can also participate in constabulary missions along with the police and gendarmerie (Guardia Civil) as well as in other tasks like surveillance, search and rescue (SAR), and fight against sea pollution.

Our home port is Las Palmas Naval Station (Canary Islands).

OPV ”Meteoro” is the fourth ship with that name in the Spanish Navy. The first three vessels were: a gunboat with base in Antilles; an auxiliary cruiser which fought in the 1898 U.S. – Spanish War; and a torpedo boat, later converted into an anti-submarine frigate.

The ‘Meteoro’ (P-41) is the first of the six offshore patrol vessels built by Navantia in its San Fernando shipyards.

The crew consists of 52 people: 9 officers, 12 NCOs and 31 seamen and ratings.

Depending on the mission entrusted, the ‘Meteoro’ can embark an air unit with its support personnel and also a Marine Corps security detachment.

OPV “Meteoro” actively participates in MSOs within territorial waters and other operations like the fight against drug-smuggling. The vessel has taken part in Operation ‘ATALANTA’ on three occasions (2013, 2015 and 2018), in Operation ‘Sea Guardian’ (2021) and in several national and international exercises like ‘PHOENIX EXPRESS’, ‘FLOTEX’, ‘MAES’, ‘SPANISH MINEX’ and ‘ITALIAN MINEX’. The P-41 is currently the flagship of SNMCMG-2 (2022).
