During the night of May 5th, and in total darkness, the frigate ‘Canarias’ was involved in a rescue operation of more than 600 people in the Mediterranean Sea near the Libyan coast.

That day, a wave of more than 30 craft from Libya was spotted and the ‘Canarias’ was requested to go to the area where other SAR units were deployed, but more help was needed. The ‘Canarias’ proceeded to the area to continue with the rescue operation but her radars and night vision systems discovered five new craft which had not been spotted before.

At the end, the Spanish frigate embarked 651 sub-Saharan migrants: 586 men, 61 women and 4 babies.

At dawn, and having verified that no further craft were in the area, the ‘Canarias’ headed towards Italy to disembark the migrants.

On this occasion, the different ships patrolling the area rescued a total of 2,100 people. Three alleged human traffickers were also arrested and brought to the Italian justice.
