The Oceanographic Research Ship ‘Hespérides’ set sail on November 24th from Cartagena (SE Spain) to take part in the 31st Spanish Antarctic Campaign.

The ship was bid farewell by several military and civilian authorities, among them the Maritime Action Chief, Vice-admiral Manuel de la Puente, the Coordination Executive of the Spanish Research Agency, Mrs. Victoria Ley, and the Technical Secretary of the Spanish Polar Committee, Mr. Antonio Quesada.

The ship is scheduled to arrive at the research and working area on December 16th, returning by May 25th 2018. The ship will be the platform from which several research and scientific projects will be conducted in the Antarctic and the Central Atlantic Ocean. The ‘Hespérides’ is also tasked with the logistic support of the Spanish bases in that continent.

The ‘Hespérides’ is the only Spanish oceanic research ship capable of operating in all the oceans and seas of the world. The ship, under command of Cdr. Aurelio Fernández Dapena, has a complement of 60 people and can accommodate up to 37 scientists.
