Chief of Naval Personnel Who Is Who

Admiral Francisco José Cortés Uría

Admiral Francisco José Cortés Uría was born in Corunna in 1957. He graduated from the Naval Academy as Lieutenant Junior Grade in 1979.

He served on board the following naval units: training ship "Juan Sebastián de Elcano", frigates "Cataluña" and "Victoria" and was Chief of Staff of the 41st Escort Squadron (F-80). Admiral Cortés was also posted to the Fleet and STANAVFORMED Staffs participating in the peace-keeping operations in the former Yugoslavia (1994/95).

He has been lecturer at the Naval Warfare College and the Higher School of the Armed Forces. He was also appointed Chief of the Doctrine Section of the Personnel Division, and Director of the Spanish Chief of Naval Staff’s Inner Cabinet.

Admiral Cortés was Commanding Officer of the patrol boat "Lazaga" (1989/90), corvette "Infanta Cristina" (1996/97), oceanographic research ship "Hespérides" (2001/03), participating in two Antarctic campaigns, and the LPD "Galicia" deploying in the Lebanon in 2006.

As flag officer, Admiral Cortés has been Director of Naval Education; Chief of the Ferrol Naval Station; Maintenance Director at the Logistic Support Headquarters; Advisor to the Defence Undersecretary and Advisor to the Spanish Chief of Naval Staff.
